DBPD Officer On Paid Leave Following DUI Arrest

DUI1Daytona Beach police arrested one of their own recently after an accident on one of the local roadways.

Officer Shawna Hamel was arrested, and charged with Driving Under The Influence after a single vehicle accident on Bill France Boulevard where she was trying to make a right turn into an apartment complex, and drove into a drainage ditch.

A DBPD officer who responded to the scene stated that Hamel was “unsteady on her feet, and had a strong alcohol odor on her person”  and witnesses stated that she was “inebriated” at a Sunoco station just minutes before the crash.

Hamel failed her field sobriety tests, and had two cracks at the breathalyzer, and blew a .170, and a .162 respectively, which are both 2 times over the legal limit of .08 here in the state of Florida

Due to the status of Hamel being a Law Enforcement Officer, her jail mugshot won’t be released under public record.

Hamel has been placed on paid leave, pending the results of an internal investigation. She’s also required to pay a $500.00 (US) bond to be released from the Volusia County Branch Jail.

Our resident blogger Dana, has just completed a program dealing with DUI herself, and had this to say:

“There is ZERO excuse for anyone to be driving  while they are drunk. If you’re drinking, DO NOT DRIVE!!! Even police officers are not above the law. Call a taxi, a friend, something, but don’t put other people’s lives in jeopardy, just because you decided to ‘have a couple’ as Hamel stated, and then get behind the wheel of a vehicle!!!!”

I don’t think we could agree more.
