THE BIBLE OR THE BAYONET

Recently I listened to a talk by Chris Pinto of Noise of Thunder Radio which I thought was especially relevant as we have national elections coming up on the 20th. Chris was discussing a quote from the 19th C minister, Robert Winthrop, who said that men must be controlled by either the Bible or the bayonet. Chris quoted a number of other great people of the past, all pointing out the dangers of a country abandoning its Christian heritage. You might like to ponder over the Winthrop quote and some others:

Robert Winthrop 1849. “All societies of men must be governed in some way or other. The less they may have of stringent State Government, the more they must have of individual self-government. The less they rely on public law or physical force, the more they must rely on private moral restraint. Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled, either by a power within them, or by a power without them; either by the Word of God, or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible, or by the bayonet. It may do for other countries and other governments to talk about the State supporting religion. Here, under our own free institutions, it is religion which must support the State.”

William Penn “Men must be governed by God, or they will be ruled by tyrants.”

George Washington. “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports… Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

Benjamin Rush, a distinguished physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Rush presents an impelling case for Bible in schools and says, “But passing by all other considerations, and contemplating merely the political institutions of the United States, I lament that we waste so much time and money in punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them.”

General Douglas MacArthur 1951. “In this day of gathering storms, as moral deterioration of political power spreads its growing infection, it is essential that every spiritual force be mobilized to defend and preserve the religious base upon which this nation’s founded; for it has been that base which has been the motivating impulse to our moral and national growth.”

What these great men recognized is that the boundaries of true morality come from God. America’s founders, whether Christian or otherwise, knew that Christianity held the key to what is right and what is wrong. They also understood that a government will only have good moral laws it the people are good and moral. This requires a strong Bible-believing church committed to expounding the full Word of God and to evangelism and discipleship.

If the church is strong, the people are moral and a strong-handed government is not needed to control the people. There is freedom and liberty and crime rates are low. If the church is weak and has rejected the truth of God’s Word, then there will be more crime and lawlessness, and the government will be more controlling. The population is endangered if they don’t uphold God’s laws.

If you give voting rights to millions of corrupt people who have evil ideas, and corrupted ideas of right and wrong, what kind of decisions do you expect them to make? Corrupt people will vote for corrupt leaders.

If we have a government that has gone against God’s laws and is more controlling, then the church is to blame for not doing what God called it to do – to be salt and light. Indeed, how can we expect to have a good government if sections of the church are condoning homosexuality and same sex marriages, divorce, etc., and even rejecting the Genesis account of Creation?

Petitions to the government against abortion, same-sex marriages, euthanasia, etc., will never succeed in the long-term unless the population is taught from a young age to respect Christian values and morals.

Today we have a lukewarm church which is rewriting the basic tenets of Christianity and replacing them with desires of the flesh. Many churches and their congregations are turning away from being Bible-believing to fitting the description Paul gives to Timothy about how things will look in the last days. (2 Tim 3:1-9). We seem to have arrived!

Paul McGuire, in an article on the destiny of America in the last days, writes, “Given the statistical evidence that nine of out of ten children from evangelical churches are rejecting their faith by the time they are in college, these kinds of churches are not very effective in reaching people with the gospel. In addition, the Christian church in America is shrinking as fast as the church did in Europe, and soon it will be an almost completely insignificant force in our nation.”

It is widely concluded that western culture has entered a post-Christian era. As in America, New Zealand is becoming a spiritual wasteland. We cannot blame any political party or government. The church is fully to blame. If Christians as individuals would repent and renew their commitment to the truth of the Word, and move on from milk to meat, then perhaps we could have some hope for this nation of ours which has been so richly blessed in the past in so many ways. As Robert Winthrop says, men must be ruled either by the Bible or the bayonet.

ISLAM RISING

Britain has raised its terrorism alert to the second-highest level with Prime Minister David Cameron saying that the Islamic State (ISIS) group operating in Syria and Iraq posed the country’s greatest-ever security risk. Likewise, Australia has said that the large number of Australians who have joined up with ISIS means that Australia is facing its highest threat for some time.

Although the US has been active striking ISIS targets in Iraq, Washington is still trying to decide its position on domestic violence. According to the FBI, there are eight types of domestic extremist movements, none motivated by radical Islam! The Obama administration fails to recognise a domestic Islamist threat. Islamic activists in the US have strong-armed the FBI to purge anti-terrorism training material considered “offensive” to Muslims. In the meantime, it is reported that ISIS operatives are planning to cross the border from Mexico into the US.

Here are a few more of the hundreds of examples of Islam rising:

  • Islamist militias in Libya have taken control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners. Western intelligence agencies are warning that they could be used in an attack like the 9/11 Twin Towers one.
  • In Norway, a Muslim terrorist group, Ansar al-Sunna’, is threatening that if a section of the nation’s capital isn’t transformed into a Sharia-complaint Muslim nation, an attack rivalling 9/11 will be launched upon the Scandinavian nation.
  • An Antichrist confederacy? The Chairman of the International Union for Muslim Scholars has just announced in Turkey that, “The Caliphate in today’s age must be established through a number of several states that are governed by Sharia and supported by both the rulers and the people in the form of a federation or confederation and not as it was in the past.” They have announced that a future confederacy of Muslim nations must and will be established and centred in the land of the Muslim Caliphate, Turkey.
  • President Obama and First Lady Michelle have released a statement thanking Muslim Americans for their many “achievements and contributions… to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.”
  • Muhammed, including various spellings of it, was the most popular boys’ name in Britain in 2013. The top three spellings of the name accounted for the names of 7,445 boys, easily beating the second most popular name Oliver which got 6,949.
  • Britain’s first elected Muslim mayor, Lutfur Rahman of Tower Hamlets in East London, has been accused in the High Court of exerting unlawful “spiritual influence” over voters. Electors were told they could expect rewards in the afterlife if they voted for him, but might be punished if they supported the Labour rival. There are 65,000 Muslims in the borough of Tower Hamlets.
  • The interim president of the Central African Republic has chosen a Muslim prime minister to head a transitional government in the Christian-dominated country.

OTHER NEWS

The petro-dollar officially began its decline on August 27 when Russian Gazprom conducted the first sale of oil in a currency other than the US dollar. Gazprom will now accept both Roubles and Yuan for the exchange of oil and gas products. The petro-dollar system had been operating for 40 years and has benefitted the US considerably. The petro-dollar first began with Saudi Arabia which is now in talks that would disconnect them from the dollar too and open energy sales within the OPEC nations to be done in Roubles, Yuan and perhaps even the Euro.

Wall Street has admitted that banks are getting hit by cyber-attacks every single minute of every single day and it is a growing problem. They have not made this widely known because they didn’t want the public to be alarmed.

A judge has ruled that a monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments must be removed from the lawn in front of Bloomfield City Hall in New Mexico. The judge said that the monument amounts to government speech and has the “principal effect of endorsing religion.” The suit was filed in 2012 on behalf of two Bloomfield residents who practice the Wiccan religion.

China’s water shortage: A study by China’s Ministry of Water Resources has found that about 55% of China’s 50,000 rivers that existed in the 1990s have disappeared. China continues to overuse its water resources despite the severe shortage of water. More than 400 major cities are short of water and about a quarter of them have a “serious scarcity.”

To solve this huge problem, the Chinese have developed a policy of acquiring land in other countries and importing water-intensive goods and commodities such as wheat and corn. In New Zealand, China has been making land purchases which have been raising questions about whether foreigners should be allowed to own large areas of NZ land. The recent “Crafar” farms purchase was the largest foreign purchase of NZ land by value. Construction is also well under way of the $210m dairy factory for infant formula near Pokeno by the Chinese dairy giant Yashili.

The goal is to increase China’s food supply and reduce its domestic water demand. China has the economic ability to do this and has purchased land in other countries too such as South America and Africa. Globally, about a quarter or more of the world’s population face a water deficit. Water is the most important resource in the world and had been a major cause of conflict.

“Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.” (2 John 9-11)
