Most of you will know something about Europe’s LHC which is the world’s largest piece of research equipment. It straddle’s the borders of France and Switzerland at a depth of up to 175 metres where it forms a 27 kilometre circuit. It smashes together sub-atomic particles at incredibly high speeds. The whole thing creates temperatures more than 100,000-times the temperature at the centre of the sun. Scientists there are currently attempting to play God as they seek to recreate the conditions immediately following the ‘Big Bang’ event that gave rise to the Universe millions of years ago, or so they say.

This great machine cost $9 billion. If you go to Genesis chapter 1 you can read exactly how the Universe was created in 6 days, not millions of years, and even see in detail the days on which everything was created.

Some people are very worried. The eminent physicist Stephen Hawking is one. Hawkins writes that the Higgs Boson (the “God particle”) could become unstable at very high energy levels and have the potential to trigger a catastrophic vacuum decay which would cause space and time to collapse and we would not have any warning of the dangers. Another astrophysicist says the experiment could literally cause the planet to explode. There is a lot of heated discussion on this but we have the prophetic Word of God to reassure us that nothing like this is prophesied for the present time. Very bad things are coming, but the planet won’t explode. This is not to discount a local disaster. God is in control!

Some others are concerned that there may be a dangerous dark dimension to it that could threaten humanity’s existence. They are concerned about experiments aimed at creating multi-dimensional portals, or passageways, which would open doors through which something could be sent out to or received from another dimension not of this world. This other dimension could be a far off world or a demonic one. Some working on the project think they may be opening a doorway to heaven. Some even talk of using a portal for time travel. If you are a Christian you need not worry about any of this either. We have been equipped to deal with demons wherever they come from. (Eph 6)

There is another odd thing about CERN. There is a statue of Nataraji, the dancing form of the Hindu Lord Shiva outside. Some have called it the “dance of destruction.” On you tube you can also watch an occultic dance performance inside the collider itself. I’m not sure what CERN is getting up to here, but in October they announced opportunities for artists to immerse themselves in the research of particle physics and its community. More artistic performances in the LHC perhaps?

In 2 Thessalonians 2 we are told that a restrainer is holding back the appearance of the Antichrist. This secret power of lawlessness (mystery of lawlessness) is already at work, but is restrained. A number of restrainers of evil are mentioned in the Bible. These include the church, government, the preaching of the Gospel, God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Most pretribulationists believe that the Holy Spirit is the restrainer mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2. Those who believe in a pre-wrath/intraseal Rapture (between the 6th and 7th seals of Revelation 6) generally see either the Holy Spirit or the archangel Michael as the restrainer.

Unfortunately Paul never told us who the restrainer was, so any view must be extrapolated from Scripture. However, we can look at the varying views and be Bereans and check them as best we can. It is similar to the position of a pretribulation Rapture. There is no Scripture which states it explicitly. It is extrapolated and it is not possible to be dogmatic about it. Pretribulationists seem to believe that the Holy Spirit will be removed from the earth when the church is raptured before the Antichrist appears, but also believe there will be many “tribulation saints.” As the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts people of sin, it is difficult to see how He could do this if He is totally removed.

There are a number of arguments why people see Michael as the restrainer. Very briefly, Alan Kurschner summarises them from Colin R. Nicholl’s writings as: 1) it is the view of contemporary Jewish literature that see Michael as the chief opponent of Satan. 2) Michael is seen as a celestial restrainer in Daniel 10-12, the source of Paul’s exposition in 2 Thessalonians 2. 3) The particular use of Hebrew and Greek terms. (That’s all a bit beyond me!) 4) Early rabbinic interpretation of verses in Daniel 11 and 12. 5) Revelation 12:7-17 supports Michael as the restrainer because it links the cessation of Michael’s war against the dragon with the unprecedented persecution of God’s people which is consistent with 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7 and Daniel 11:45-12:1.

It is reasoned therefore that the apostle Paul sees Michael the Archangel as the restrainer, whose ministry ceases and causes the Antichrist to desecrate the Temple with the abomination of desolation and to bring about the great tribulation against God’s people. This view allows for the Holy Spirit to continue convicting people of sin during the tribulation, so these prewrath people believe there will be many new believers during that time. However, because of persecution there will be many martyrs.

Michael obviously has a very important role to play in the tribulation, especially in connection with the Jews, but is he really the restrainer that Paul refers to?

Jacob Prasch views the Holy Spirit as the restrainer. His views have extremely important implications for Christians still alive during the tribulation and before they are raptured. He argues that there is a difference between the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Christians and His role described by Jesus in John 16:8-9 as the One who convicts of sin. “When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.” The Holy Spirit will never be taken from the hearts of God’s people, but He will cease to convict of sin, or cease to restrain at the beginning of the tribulation enabling the Antichrist to appear.

In John 20:22, Jesus breathed on the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” From this time on they were indwelt by the Holy Spirit but never received power until Pentecost. In Luke 24:49 Jesus told them, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” This was the promise of the power of the Holy Spirit which would enable them to spread the Gospel and see thousands of converts.

Prasch believes that we will see this process reversed. The power of the Holy Spirit, acting up to the beginning of the tribulation (last 7 years) as the restrainer, will be removed, but believers will continue to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will also be able to seal the 144,000 Jews. There is nothing in Scripture which says that the 144,000 will be evangelists to the whole world.

If Jacob Prasch’s view is correct, then it will be impossible to see people saved during the tribulation. The outcome for Christians would likely be suddenly far worse than if Michael was the restrainer. In Matthew 24 Jesus says that “You will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death.” He doesn’t say “many of you.” The betrayal by those who have turned away from the faith will be severe. In the 5th seal of Revelation 6 there is a picture of these martyrs longing for the time when their blood will be avenged.

I see some problems with Michael as the restrainer. He cannot be everywhere at once. The secret power of lawlessness is already at work now and has been with us for centuries. The restrainer is already restraining lawlessness to some extent. (2 Thess 2:7) This is confirmed by John. “But every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.” (1 John 4:3) The mystery of lawlessness is the mystery of sin and its influence.

In my opinion it is the Holy Spirit who restrains sin and it is He who is restraining the appearance of the Antichrist. If this is so, when the Antichrist appears it won’t be just a gradual continuation of increasing persecution, rather the clampdown on Christians will be sudden and devastating. In the fifth seal in Revelation 6, the souls of martyred Christians are told to wait until the rest of their number is killed. Then gloriously, between the 6th and 7th seal the martyrs appear in heaven having come out of the great tribulation. Jesus describes the great tribulation as the time after the abomination appears in the Temple. (Matt 24:21)

As Paul never explicitly states the identity of the restrainer it is not something that should divide the body of Christ, but be a topic of discussion.

The different faces of Islam: The media has discovered that widely acclaimed All Black Sonny Bill Williams is a Muslim. SBW has been praised for his gentleness and consideration when he gave his RWC medal to a schoolboy and when he consoled a Springbok player after the epic semifinal. A friend of SBW, Anthony Mundine who is a fellow Muslim, says that a huge part of the change in SBW is due to his conversion to Islam. SBW has become a “true Muslim” which has given him happiness. Mundine says, “If you really delve deep into Islam you’ll see you have to be pious, you have to be humble, you have to be generous to your fellow human beings.”

On the same day a report appeared in the NZ Herald on line about the Facebook page of an Auckland man which shows him posing with an ISIS flag, holding an AK47-style rifle and speaking of his role in a holy war. He is said to have professed his allegiance to the terrorist group. “One day Islam will dominate everything that the sun sets on meaning the whole earth,” he says.

The difference between the two men is that SBW is showing the deceptive peaceful side of Islam, whereas the other man is obeying explicitly the true teachings of the Qur’an which say to kill infidels and take the whole world for Allah.

The largest behavioral conditioning experiment ever has just begun in China. A citizen score system will rate each citizen on the basis of their political views, their expression on social media, the kinds of purchases they make, and their credit scores. These scores will be taken into account when handing out loans, approving travel visas, etc. The government will have a very effective method of reinforcing the kind of behaviour it believes to be politically and socially correct. The scores will be linked to China’s national ID card which will be mandatory by 2020.

In Germany, thousands of Muslims have disappeared from the camps they were put in. The UN is partnering with a private company to offer a solution – a new ‘universal’ identification system that will comply with the UN’s sustainability goal of having biometric identification in the hands of every citizen in the world by 2030.

In Britain, the Church of England is considering plans to keep some historic village churches across the country opened only on holy days such as Christmas and Easter due to population shifts and the ever-growing decline in attendance and church membership. About 1 in 4 parishes have fewer than 10 regular worshippers.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has proposed 24-hour video surveillance on the Temple Mount area in Jerusalem in order to help quell the latest round of violence in the area. It sounds like a foreshadowing of Revelation 11 where it says the whole world will be able to watch when the two witnesses are killed on the street and left there for three and a half days.

claim Germany for Allah. Remember that Indonesia has a larger population of Muslims than the Middle East. Also many ISIS members. Let’s pray that nothing shifts them.

Those interested in the pretribulation versus some other time for the rapture debate will find this interesting.
